E3 Cometh: Part 1: Nintendo

E3 Cometh

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is coming June 17-19 and is looking to be one of the most unpredictable expos of the year. With Nintendo poised to bring out the 3D successor to the DS, the Nintendo 3DS, and promised games to be shown such as Metroid Other M (Nintendo/Team Ninja), Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision/Treyarch),  and Metal Gear Solid: Rising (Konami/Kojima Productions). But with every E3 that has come and gone, there have been myriad surprises with everything from surprise games out of nowhere to the next generation of game consoles. So what can we expect from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft next month? Let’s take a look and make some possibly wild, but educated guesses.

Nintendo is a company that prides itself on innovation. They were the first to have a controller with a “joypad” as well as the classical “cross” button along with the usual action buttons and the now-familiar Z button. With the Wii, they pretty much invented console motion controls and have Microsoft and Sony playing catch-up. Since the launch of the Wii, Nintendo has seen a resurgence in console popularity, although they have dominated the handheld market non-stop since the original GameBoy launched over 20 years ago. As the leading console platform in the world, Nintendo has regained market-share it hasn’t seen since the early 1990s.

The Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS

And Nintendo isn’t letting go of that any time soon. The next iteration of the DS hardware will, according to Nintendo, not only have backwards compatibility to the current DS library, but also have upgraded graphics with 3D capabilities. And with those 3D graphics comes something worthwhile to hear to many a gamer: no 3D glasses required. This is accomplished via the smaller size of the screen compared to a standard HDTV with which you would need the glasses to see the 3D content with. At E3, we’ll see it unveiled with some possible software from within Nintendo and a few 3rd party publishing houses.

Having said that, I’m sure we will see the expected and already announced titles show up for play-through and you can bet you’ll get pics and vids of those games on here. But what of the surprises Nintendo is known for? On one hand, there have been some

Metroid: Other M

underwhelming surprises such as the Wii Pulse Monitor. On the other hand, there have been pleasant announcements such as a second new Zelda game coming to the console. Even from 3rd party publishers/developers, we’ve seen in E3 past surprises such as High Voltage Software’s still-in-development game “The Grinder” or the jointly developed “Metroid: Other M” by Nintendo and Tecmo’s Team Ninja. This E3 is full of possibilities from Nintendo. Here’s some of the possible predictions from Loc Da’Borg for what Nintendo may have in store for us as far as surprises:

  1. unveiling of next-generation hardware (or merely an announcement with light specs) of Wii’s successor.
  2. Not only video but a playable demo of the next Zelda
  3. Video of what Wii’s successor is capable of visually
  4. A new game from Square-Enix
  5. New installations of popular franchises that have not yet made it to the Wii previously, finally announced.

These were merely guesses, albeit rather educated based on past E3 appearances by Nintendo. It’s all up in the air as to whether Nintendo will really come through on this or not… or show us things we haven’t even thought of to this point! As we head into the next E3, let us keep our expectations rooted in reality and low. We do not need another “megaton” fiasco on our hands.

Part 2: Sony

This isn’t about who will “win” E3 but more about what surprises may be in store and what we, the consumers, can expect and look forward to. Assimilate the knowledge and hopefully this E3 doesn’t disappoint!

I still can’t believe Metroid turned out to be a girl…
Call me sexist, but it ruined the gaming experience- LOL.
